MANILA, Philippines – University of the Philippines (UP) remains the No. 1 team in the UAAP Season 80 men's football tournament after settling for a 1-1 draw with University of Santo Tomas (UST) on Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
JB Borlongan broke the ice in the 31st minute for the Fighting Maroons but the Growling Tigers got a huge break when Javier Bonoan scored an own goal in the 57th minute for the equalizer.
UP solidified its hold on the top spot of the table with 17 points, while UST dropped to third spot with 14 points.
Meanwhile, defending champion Ateneo de Manila University rose to second place after outlasting Far Eastern University (FEU), 4-3, in a thriller.
Reigning MVP Jarvey Gayoso netted a brace while Ryan Haosen delivered the late winner as the Blue Eagles overcame a hat-trick by Tamaraws striker Gilbert Mendoza to rise to 15 points.
Haosen's 87th minute header gave Ateneo back the lead, five minutes after Mendoza produced the equalizer.
In the other match, University of the East pulled off a 2-0 victory over Adamson University to level with National University in fourth place with 10 points.
Mark Lerion (50th minute) and Mar Diano (58th) produced second half goals for the Red Warriors, who have won two straight while keeping the Falcons without a point to show.
The second round of the football tournament starts on Thursday, also at Rizal Memorial.
