Promoter says Marquez deserves at least $10M
MANILA, Philippines – Although Juan Manuel Marquez is free to fight any boxer, the Mexican’s promoter admitted that only Manny Pacquiao can guarantee a lucrative fight purse for the counterpunching specialist.
In a recent meeting with Marquez in Mexico, Top Rank’s Bob Arum has laid out Timothy Bradley and Brandon Rios as the Mexican’s alternatives to Pacquiao.
But Marquez’s co-promoter Fernando Beltran conceded to Boxing Scene that a Pacquiao fight remains the biggest payday available for the Mexican.
Marquez received a guaranteed $6-million fight purse during his fourth clash with Pacquiao, where the Mexican won by sixth-round knockout.
In the fifth fight, however, Beltran said Marquez won’t accept anything less than $10 million.
"I believe he deserves [at least $10 million or more]. We have to make a decision by April [on his next fight] and then we'll make the announcement on who he will fight in September,” he said in Boxing Scene.
Arum, for his part, said Marquez clearly wants to fight Pacquiao again, adding that it’s just a question of how much he’s asking for.
"I know that Marquez wants to fight Manny Pacquiao, but we need to discuss it further," said Arum.
