MANILA, Philippines—The new-look Davao Aguilas will be put to the test immediately, as they host Kaya Iloilo FC in their first match of the new season of the Philippines Football League at Davao del Norte Sports Complex in Tagum City on Sunday.
The Aguilas are brimming with optimism after a busy offseason that saw them acquire several key players, including former Global Cebu midfielder and national team mainstay Dennis Villanueva.
Villanueva is one of 9 new acquisitions who will be joining Davao's core of Phil and James Younghusband, Dylan de Bruycker, Simone Rota and Angel Guirado.
Given the new signings, expectations are high for the Aguilas, and they say they are ready to meet all of them.
"We expect the expectations, not only from supporters and the fans but from the club owners and the management as well," said Davao head coach Marlon Maro, who revealed on Saturday that they will be playing without newcomers Adam Reed and Takashi Odawara due to suspensions carried over from last season.
"As a professional team, we have to adapt to these challenges. We won’t be having Adam Reed and Odawara tomorrow so it’s another adjustment for the club.
"This gives a chance to prove that we have a deep bench and that we have good players from every position. We have to be positive, our objective is to have a good start."
