MANILA, Philippines – Alaska coach Luigi Trillo wants Calvin Abueva to play a new role when they begin their PBA Commissioner's Cup title defense this month.

Trillo hopes that putting Abueva in either the off-guard or the small forward position will bring back the old "Beast" in the 2012-13 PBA Rookie of the Year.

“I think you can put him at a 4 (power forward) anytime, but he has a comfort zone at the 2 (off guard) and 3 (small forward),” he said in a report by Richard Dy.

“It’s nice see him with that. I know he wants to do better than what he did last conference," Trillo added.

Abueva became one of the hottest rookies in the 2012-2013 PBA season. But his performance in his sophomore year declined amid controversies.

But Trillo believes Abueva will be able to contribute better if he stays in either the number 2 or 3 positions.

“He’s coming into the game with a whole new approach. I see willingness and hunger [from him] to contribute in anyway,” he said.

Abueva has figured in several on-court incident in just two years in the league. PBA Commissioner Chito Salud even urged Abueva avoid trouble with his fellow players.

“Iyun ang Calvin Abueva na nagfo-focus sa game. ‘Yung antics at a minimum lang,” said Salud in a previous report. “’Yung Calvin na nafa-flop, na nakabanggaan ng ibang players, hindi ‘yan ‘yung Calvin na nag-Rookie of the Year.”

“Ang gusto ko sa kanya ay iyung maglaro siya ng tuwid,” he said.
