MANILA, Philippines—US-based chess player Julio Catalino Sadorra has become the third Filipino "super grandmaster" following his conquest of the 2014 Lone Star Open Chess Championship last month.
Sadorra gained three ELO rating points from the said tournament, which enabled him to break the 2600 ELO barrier.
"Ino's (Sadorra) live rating is 2600.9. He is now the third player from the Philippines to break the 2600 rating mark," said National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Chairman Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr.
Mark Paragua was the first Filipino to break the 2600 ELO barrier with 2618 in 2006. Paragua's ELO rating went as high as 2621.
Wesley So tallied an ELO rating of 2610 in 2008, becoming the second Filipino "Super Grandmaster." He now boasts of a live ELO rating of 2740.3. - Marlon Bernardino
