MANILA, Philippines – National team head coach Chot Reyes is open to the idea of fielding in Gilas Pilipinas as a guest team in the 2014 PBA Governors Cup, believing it will help them prepare for the FIBA Asia World Cup in Spain.

The season-ending Governors Cup starts in May and ends in July.

“Anything that can give us more time to practice and prepare, that’s good for us,” Reyes told reporters after the national team held its first practice Monday evening at ULTRA.

Reyes did point out that the decision was not up to him, and in the first place, he is unsure if the team owners will allow the Gilas players to suit up for the national team during the conference.

“Ibang tanong na ‘yan,” he said. “That’s not for me to answer.”

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) executive director Sonny Barrios told that the possibility of being a guest team in the PBA was one of the ideas they were considering in order to help the national team prepare for the tournament in Spain.

“Hopefully, that would be seen as a win-win, dahil kapag kayo na pull out sa third conference, magsa-suffer din naman ang PBA,” said Barrios.

“Whether it’s approved or not, we’ll have another configuration and then we’ll wait and see. But indeed, there is a big clamor for you guys to get together as soon as possible,” he added.

The FIBA World Cup will be held in Spain starting August 31 until September 14.
