MANILA, Philippines – Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez wants to claim the WBO welterweight crown even if it means facing Manny Pacquiao for the fifth time, according to his promoter.
Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions said the Mexican counter-puncher may fight his Filipino rival again, provided that there will be a world title at stake.
“He wants the challenge of the Bradley-Pacquiao winner, he wants to make history of a fifth world title in five divisions,” said Beltran in Lance Pugmire’s LA Times report.
“If Pacquiao wins he’ll have the belt, and Juan wants it,” added the promoter, who co-promotes Marquez with Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc.
Prior to Beltran’s statement, Marquez repeatedly declined facing Pacquiao again, especially after he knocked out the Filipino in December 2012.
But Marquez wants to achieve boxing history by becoming the first Mexican to win 5 titles in 5 weight classes.
If Pacquiao wins his rematch against Timothy Bradley, it becomes almost automatic for a fifth Pacquiao-Marquez fight to happen, said Beltran.
The boxing promoter is currently working on a deal for a possible fight between his client and Mike Alvarado.
Beltran said Marquez was pleased with terms for the bout scheduled on May 17.
