MANILA, Philippines – Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner Chito Salud has confirmed that Kia Motors Philippines and Blackwater Sports have both applied for membership in the league, paving the way for an expansion in the PBA.

“Our office has received two formal letters of intent to join the PBA in its 2015 season: Columbia Automative Corporation (Team KIA) and Ever Bilena Inc. (Blackwater Spots),” Salud said in a report.

“Their admission as new franchise holders is subjects to a ¾ approval by the Board of Governors after evaluation of their financial capacity, among others, by the Commissioner and the recommendation resulting from such assessment,” Salud added.

The Board is set to meet on Thursday.

If the applications of Kia and Blackwater are approved, the PBA will expand to 12 teams for the first time in the league’s history.

Blackwater’s application has been no secret, but Kia wanted little fanfare even though a PBA official revealed that they submitted their application earlier than the Ever Bilena franchise.

“Mas nauna pa nga nagpasa ‘yung Kia. Kasi Friday lang nag-submit ng letter of intent ang Blackwater,” an unnamed PBA official told the league website.

“We are very happy because we’ll be seeing a bigger and more exciting league next season,” the official added.
