Donaire denies Mijares fight
MANILA, Philippines – World super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire has denied that his next opponent will be Mexican boxer Cristian Mijares.
Ronnie Nathanielsz of PhilBoxing initially reported that Donaire will make the first defense of his WBO super bantamweight title against Mijares on July 14 in Texas.
Donaire disputed this, however, posting on his Facebook page that he has “no one in front of me for my next fight yet.”
“I’ve heard lots of names tossed around, but like I said, I haven’t seen any papers yet,” he added.
Donaire was supposed to face Jorge Arce next after winning the WBO title against Wilfredo Vazquez last February. That fight fell through, however, and Arce is now seeking a slot at the undercard of Manny Pacquiao’s bout against Timothy Bradley this July.
Donaire said he will just wait and see as to who he will fight next.
“Whoever wants to put in their application to be my next opponent, go right ahead. I’ll just be sitting here playing Dragon Age while y’all work it out,” he said.
Mijares is a former super flyweight champion with a record of 41 wins, six losses and two draws. Donaire, meanwhile has a 28-1 record.
