MANILA, Philippines – The Barangay Ginebra Kings finally notched their first victory of the PBA Commissioner's Cup after a dominant 93-72 victory over the Barako Bull Energy Cola Wednesday night at the Araneta Coliseum.
Mark Caguioa had 23 points while import Vernon Macklin tallied 21 points and 14 rebounds as the Kings won for the first time after four straight losses to start the conference.
According to the league website, it was Ginebra’s first victory since Game 2 of their quarter-finals series against Rain or Shine in the PBA Philippine Cup.
"We just couldn't make baskets in our initial games. Bakit ganon? Mahirap sagutin. If we can't make open shots, siguro kumpiyansa lang ang problema," Ginebra coach Alfrancis Chua said.
“I told the guys to believe in yourself, your teammates at dadating din yan," he added.
After leading 39-26 at halftime, the Gin Kings put the Energy Cola away in the third period, with Macklin scoring 10 points in the quarter. They would go on to lead by as much as 28 points.
Chua had high praise for Macklin, who replaced ineffective import Herbert Hill.
"Malakas kung malakas at ang kagandahan eh pumapasa. He’s a big boost to his teammates," Chua said of Macklin.
Barako import Evan Brock had 16 points and 14 boards, while Josh Urbiztondo added 16 markers.
It was not enough, however, as the Energy Cola lost for the second time this conference against three victories.
