MANILA, Philippines – The National University (NU) Bulldogs defeated the Ateneo Blue Batters, 5-2, to extend the UAAP Season 74 baseball finals to a winner-take-all Game 3 Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
NU had to encounter some nervous moments at the bottom of the ninth inning as Ateneo threated with a bases-loaded situation with just one out.
But the Bulldogs were relieved as Aries Oruga held his own from the mound, forcing Telos Remollo to a fly to third base and striking out Bocboc Bernardo, who was sent in to pinch-hit for Kirk Long, in the final frame.
Both NU and Ateneo are seeking their first crown in UAAP baseball. The knockout match is set for Wednesday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Over at the Ateneo field, De La Salle stayed alive in the women’s football final via a 4-3 penalty shootout win over last year’s second place University of Santo Tomas.
The Tigresses were the more aggressive side, but the Lady Archers held fort and forced the shootout.
La Salle secured the win against the twice-to-beat Tigresses, who saw Jowie Ann Barruga and Maria Christine Fuentes miss their penalty shots.
The do-or-die match will be played Sunday, March 4.
