MANILA, Philippines – Undefeated Filipino super flyweight “King” Arthur Villanueva vowed not to underestimate his Mexican foe despite the latter’s “anemic” professional record.
The WBO International super flyweight champion will be facing Fernando Aguilar, a Mexican with pro record of nine wins and six defeats, at the supporting bout of Pinoy Pride XXIV: The Future is Now on Saturday.
Villanueva was slated to fight former world title contender Juan Hernandez, but the latter got injured in a motorcycle accident.
“It was supposed to be Juan Hernandez but he got into an accident two weeks ago,” explained ALA Promotion’s Dennis Canete during Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum.
Canete, however, said this is no reason for Villanueva to look past Aguilar, noting that the Filipino has more to lose.
“Arthur Villanueva is ranked No. 3 undefeated fighter. That's why in their level hindi dapat siyang magkumpyansya. He stands to lose everything while his opponent has nothing to lose,” he said.
Villanueva, for his part, said he has never underestimated anyone in his 24-fight career.
“Lahat kasi pwedeng mangyari sa ring, kahit huling round, huling 30 seconds, huling 10 seconds na lang pwede kang ma-knockout,” he said.
He added that Mexicans are known to be tough fighters.
“Kaya sa lahat ng nakalaban ko never akong nag-underestimate sa kanila,” Villanueva said.
Pinoy Pride XXIV will take place at the Solaire Resort and Casino on Saturday. It will be aired on ABS-CBN Channel 2 starting 10 a.m. on Sunday.
