MANILA, Philippines – SM Prime Holdings has promised to continue supporting Filipino figure skater Michael Christian Martinez as he embarks on his road to the 2018 Winter Olympics.

The 17-year-old Martinez began skating at the age of eight at the ice skating rink in SM Southmall in Las Piñas, and this month, he made history by representing the Philippines in the figure skating event of the Sochi Winter Olympics.

SM Prime Holdings president Hans Sy said his company has every intention of continuing their support for Martinez.

“Plans are still being made, but definitely, sigurado ‘yan, we will give our full support,” he said in an interview with Dyan Castillejo of ABS-CBN News. “As I’ve said, since 2006 we’ve believed that Filipinos can excel in figure skating.”

“So lumalabas na ‘yan. Definitely, the support will continue.”

SM was one of the companies who supported Martinez’s campaign in Sochi.

Meanwhile, Sy also announced that SM is planning to open more skating rinks in the Philippines.

“Even before this happened, we are actually putting more rinks. We just recently opened one in Megamall. Next year we’ll open one in Cebu,” he said. “All of them will be full-sized, the official size rinks.”

“One of our next plans is to see how we can develop the short track speed skating,” he added.
