'Rigo' submits incomplete VADA form
MANILA, Philippines – Just when everyone thought that the whole drug testing debacle has been settled between Nonito Donaire and Guillermo Rigondeaux, another drama unfolds.
The unification title bout between Donaire and Rigondeaux has been formally announced late last week despite the delays made by the Cuban fighter in signing an agreement to undergo testing with the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA).
Rigondeaux signed the drug screening contract on the condition that he has the option to undergo further testing through the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).
But according to Boxing Scene’s Ryan Maquinana, Rigondeaux submitted what appears to be an incomplete contract.
Donaire’s wife Rachel, who followed up the paper work, said Rigondeaux did not provide his contact information or whereabouts, which will be needed for the drug testing.
“First, they want Spanish translation. Then, they have the entire presser to hold up for an hour and a half because he refuses to sign VADA. Then, they want USADA, and now I find out they have no contract information and no whereabout addresses. If they are so used to Olympic-style drug testing, they know that information is essential ...there isn't even contact info to find the athlete,” she said.
It also turned out that the USADA wasn’t informed about the testing with Rigondeaux.
“This is the first we ever heard about it,” a USADA spokeswoman said in New York Daily News.
Donaire’s camp maintained that there will be no fight until the issue gets settled.
“We stand firm that [with] no testing, no fight,” stressed Rachel. “The more he stalls, the more suspicious this all looks.”
But Rigondeaux’s manager, Gary Hyde, explained the reason for the incomplete VADA contract.
“We told [Top Rank CEO] Bob Arum when we turned in the VADA form at the press conference that Rigo signed it, but that he’d fill in the blanks later for the other things like the address of the gym and his residence,” Hyde said.
“The reason why is he doesn’t know the address of the gym in Orlando where he’s going to be for camp yet. He also still needs the address of the hotel where he’s staying for training camp,” he claimed.
Hyde assured that the details will soon be furnished and that Rigondeaux will undergo testing.
