MANILA, Philippines – University of Santo Tomas (UST) nosed out De La Salle University, 3-2, to send the women’s finals of UAAP Season 74 Tennis to a winner-take-all match on Friday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
The Lady Archers were on their way to sweeping the Tigresses, but were derailed as Zaza Paulino stormed past Enah Baba, 6-2, 6-1, in the deciding 3rd singles match.
But it was in the 2nd doubles match that kept the Tigresses alive in the series.
Macy Gonzales and April Santos wore down Kirstie Barraquias and Trudy Amoranto, 7-6 (7), 3-6, 6-2, to level the match at 2-2.
“Ang goal namin is to win the last doubles against Amoranto and Barraquias. Solid talaga ‘yung singles nila,” said Tigresses coach Dennis Sta. Cruz.
De La Salle drew first blood with MVP Reggie Santiago beating Hazel Grecia, 6-0, 6-2, in the first singles match.
But UST fought back in the 1st doubles match with Dianne Bautista and Jhie Helar demolishing Aira Putiz and Nadine Castillo, 6-1, 6-0.
Martina Guba, younger sister of former UAAP men’s MVP Yannick Guba, routed Len-len Santos, 6-1, 6-1, in the 2nd singles match to give De La Salle a 2-1 breather.
The Lady Archers are in the finals with a twice-to-beat incentive for sweeping the 6-game eliminations.
They are hoping to match the Green Archers’ season sweep—capped by a finals victory over National University—of 11 matches since the eliminations.
The UST-De La Salle knockout match is set 9 a.m. on Sunday, February 26 at the Rizal Memorial.
