MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATED) Jeff Chan rained treys against San Mig Coffee in the second half to steer Rain or Shine to an 81-74 Game 5 victory in the PBA Philippine Cup finals at the Araneta Coliseum on Sunday.
Chan accounted for 23 of Rain or Shine’s 46 points in the second half, notching the Elasto Painters’ second win in the best-of-seven finals.
San Mig Coffee remains ahead in the series 3-2, but the momentum has obviously shifted to the Rain or Shine side.
“Ayaw ko lang talagang matalo, ‘yun lang. Eto 'yung chance namin, ayaw naming ibigyay sa kanila agad-agad,” Chan, who finished the game with 24 points.
The Mixers were actually up 43-35 in the first half, but the Elasto Painters bit the bullet and launched a third quarter storm that had San Mig Coffee reeling.
Rain or Shine also ruined the 18-point effort of Marc Pingris, who suited up for San Mig Coffee despite getting injured in Game 4.
Chan credited their defense for their victory.
“Mas ginusto naming manalo, 'yung defense namin hindi bumitaw. Kasi last two games bumitaw kami eh, lamang kami ng five points, binitawan namin,” he said.
On Chan’s lead, Rain or Shine seized a 57-54 advantage going to the fourth canto. The Mixers pulled within 60-61 on Alex Mallari’s free throw and Ian Sangalang’s layup.
Chan scored eight straight points before James Yap rallied San Mig with a 9-3 run to slice the deficit to 69-72. Rain or Shine surged ahead, but Yap managed to keep the scores close, 74-72.
Gabe Norwood later rattled in a trey, followed by Chan’s jumper, which kept Rain or Shine ahead 79-72, with 48 seconds remaining.
San Mig threatened again when Pingris scored a quick two to bring the scores to 79-74, 21.9 ticks left. However, Chan sealed the win for the E-Painters by sinking both of his charities.
Before the game, the league offered a moment of silence for the late PBA Board representative Ely Capacio, who died Sunday morning due to aneurysm.
Rain or Shine will try to tie the series on Wednesday when it meets San Mig Coffee again for Game 6 at the Araneta Coliseum.
