MANILA, Philippines – Former PBA coach-turned league vice chairman Ely Capacio passed away early Sunday, one day after suffering an aneurysm.

Capacio, who rose from the ranks from player to coach and finally to board representative, was supposed to succeed current chairman Ramon Segismundo of Meralco.

He was 58.

According to the PBA website, Capacio suited up for Tanduay for a total of eight seasons from 1979 to 1985. He became an assistant coach for Purefoods in 1988 and later took over the post left by mentor Baby Dalupan after the 1991 PBA Open Conference.

Capacio led Purefoods to its first all-Filipino title against Sarsi in his debut as head coach.

He later served as PBA Board chairman during the 2005-06 season before settling to become PBA Board representative for Petron Blaze.

“3 yrs w/ Ely in PBA was a blessing. A true friend n fought for what is right not necessarily the political or convenient route. RIP, bro !” Segismundo posted on his Twitter account.
