MANILA, Philippines – The Ateneo Lady Eagles and the Adamson Lady Falcons meet in what is expected to be a see-saw, back-and-forth battle for a spot in the finals of the UAAP Season 75 women’s volleyball tournament Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Lady Eagles and the Lady Falcons have battled through 10 highly contested sets this season, with Ateneo taking their first round match and Adamson getting their revenge in the second round.
In their first round meeting, Ateneo’s Alyssa Valdez exploded for 30 points to lead the Lady Eagles to a 25-22, 23-25, 25-18, 23-25, and 15-11 victory in a match that lasted over two hours.
The Lady Falcons would not be denied in the second round, however, as veterans Shiela Pineda, Pau Soriano and Luisa Zapanta combined to lead Adamson to a 25-22, 25-21, 19-25, 16-25 and 15-10 victory.
In that match, Valdez scored 35 points but the Lady Eagles sorely missed the services of Fille Cainglet, who was out with an ankle injury.
Their Final Four clash is expected to be another tight affair with Ateneo’s offense once again testing Adamson’s trademark floor defense.
Adamson missed the Final Four last season but put together an impressive campaign in Season 75, including victories over traditional powerhouses University of Santo Tomas and Far Eastern University.
Ateneo, meanwhile, gained the second-seed and a twice-to-beat advantage for the second consecutive season after winning four of their last five matches.
Both squads have yet to win a UAAP volleyball championship.
