MANILA, Philippines – Ginebra guard Sol Mercado's take-charge mentality on both ends of the court has earned him the PBA's Player of the Week citation for the period of February 13 to 19.

The "Sol Train" had a fiery offensive effort on Sunday to anchor the Gin Kings' 91-67 rout of Star on Sunday that allowed the perennial crowd favorites to force a winner-takes-all Game 7 in their PBA Philippine Cup semifinals series.

Coming off a nine-point performance against the Hotshots in Ginebra's 80-89 loss last Friday, Mercado was on point just two days later as he scored 12 of his 21 points in the payoff period.

It was his performance on the defensive end, however, that drew the biggest praise from head coach Tim Cone. Mercado has served as the primary defender on Star's Paul Lee, and the "Angas ng Tondo" has struggled against the Ginebra guard.

Lee managed to put up only eight points on 3-of-13 shooting in Game 6, another disappointing performance for the former Rookie of the Year.

Mercado beat out teammate Japeth Aguilar, and the San Miguel pair of Chris Ross and June Mar Fajardo for the weekly citation.

The Gin Kings return to action on Tuesday night in Game 7 of the Manila Clasico semis against Star.
