MANILA, Philippines – The trainer of hard-hitting fighter Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios would like to see his fighter take on Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez and believes the fight can be made without any problem.
Robert Garcia is currently helping Rios prepare for his March 30 rematch against Mike Alvarado, but told Boxing Scene that if “Bam Bam” is successful, he can fight Marquez in September.
“It’s a fight that can happen without major problems, since both of them are with the same promoter (Top Rank),” Garcia told Miguel Rivera.
Last week, Marquez’s trainer Ignacio “Nacho” Beristain revealed that they would be interested in a fight against Rios as opposed to a fifth fight against Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao.
“We are interested in facing a puncher, a fighter like Brandon Rios,” Beristain said.
This is something Garcia said his fighter will welcome.
“Nacho and Marquez are in a position to choose their opponent, and Juan Manuel says that he wants to fight with Brandon,” he said.
Garcia, who also trains super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire, said a Marquez-Rios fight makes more sense than a clash between Marquez and American Timothy Bradley Jr.
“A fight between Marquez and Rios would draw more attention than (a fight between Marquez and) someone like Bradley, by far,” Garcia said.
“Nacho is right, because (Brandon’s style) suits them. And it’s not only about styles, but also about business,” he added. “The fans would be very interested to see Marquez vs Rios.”
Marquez is coming off a sixth-round knockout victory over Pacquiao last December, and recently decided to hold off retirement.
Top Rank is working on a fifth fight between Marquez and Pacquiao, although the Mexican has said that he is no longer keen on another fight against his rival.
