LAS VEGAS -- The fight purse can be a major source of motivation for boxers of a mega fight.
In Juan Manuel Marquez’s case, Top Rank CEO Bob Arum believes that, after 42 rounds with Manny Pacquiao, a bigger chunk of the enchilada will delay the impending retirement of the Mexican boxer.
“It’s not because of the money but it’s because of the M-O-N-E-Y. They’re professional athletes,” Arum said.
“Hopefully we will put the fight together relatively shortly, more than the Pacquiao-Marquez 4 fight. And indeed with that fight in Macau, we can have both fighters there in April to make the official announcement,” he said.
A fifth match between Pacquiao and Marquez will extend the saga of the long-standing rivalry between the two warriors.
“The pot money will be great, it’s a huge fight… it’s bigger than the last one. Everybody wants to see it,” Arum assured. “When I was over in South Africa, all the South Africans came out to everyone and me wants to see the rematch was it real that he (Pacquiao) got knocked out. They want to see the fight again, and Marquez is on board so I look forward in September doing that fight.”
Meanwhile, boxing hall of famer Freddie Roach is excited to train Pacquiao for the September bout, saying he wants to help the Filipino avenge his loss to the Mexican boxer.
Roach added that although pay-per-view fights overseas may be difficult, the size of the boxing ring is alike and no different wherever the fight takes place.
He reiterated that Pacquiao will be more vigilant this time on the defense as he needs to look out for that big right hand from Marquez.
When asked if Pacquiao will retire after the supposed Marquez fight, Roach said: “It depends how he looks at the Marquez fight. We take one fight at a time.”
“Once I see him at the gym and see everything is okay, we will pursue it. But if things are not okay, we will have a meeting have second thoughts about that,” he said.
Meanwhile, Roach also trains two-time Olympic gold medalist and Chinese boxing superstar Zou Shiming. “I compare him to Manny a ‘lil bit because he has speed and power like Manny does and he has power in both hands,” he said.
Zou is proud that he is sharing the same coach with Pacquiao, adding that Pacquiao is really popular in China.
Roach confirmed that the Chinese is now sparring with Filipino-American Brian Viloria who will be on the co-main event on April 6 in Macau.
