MANILA, Philippines – Veteran point guard Alex Cabagnot is expected to be the leader both on and off the court for his new team, the GlobalPort Batang Pier.

Cabagnot landed in GlobalPort in a four-team trade last Tuesday that saw his former team, the San Miguel Beermen, acquire Sol Mercado from the Batang Pier.

Speaking to, GlobalPort owner Mikee Romero revealed that he has high expectations of Cabagnot, especially when it comes to providing a good example to the team’s young players.

“GlobalPort is in search of a leader that has lots of character. Cabagnot is a point guard that wants to run, distribute and also take the crucial big shots,” said Romero. “That’s what we want.”

Romero also called Cabagnot the “real leader we are looking for.”

“Our point guard position will be stable with Cabagnot. He will be a good example for our young players, especially (Terrence) Romeo and (RR) Garcia,” he said.

Cabagnot played for Petron Blaze for four years, helping to lead the franchise to four Finals appearance and one title.

With Cabagnot now in the fold, Romero believes new GlobalPort coach Pido Jarencio can achieve his goal of putting together a run-and-gun team.

“Coach Pido wants to develop a running team. With Cabagnot, (Bon Bon) Custodio, RR Garcia and Terrence Romeo, maybe we can achieve what we want to do,” he said.

GlobalPort made it to the playoffs in the PBA Philippine Cup despite the loss of top scorer Jay Washington due to injury. Seeded seventh, they were eliminated by eventual finalists Rain or Shine in the quarter-finals.
