MANILA, Philippines – Middleweight champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva has been manipulating the Ultimate Championship (UFC) for some time now, claimed former middleweight contender Dan “Hendo” Henderson.
On MMA Interviews, Henderson pointed out that Silva “has tried to pick and choose who he fights” and “manipulates the UFC a little bit” in the last five years.
“He didn’t want to fight Chael (Sonnen) again, after the first time. Obviously, he did after a while. You know he didn’t want to fight me again,” Henderson said.
Silva submitted Henderson when they fought at UFC 82 in March 2008.
Henderson feels Silva may be picking opponents in order to protect his legacy.
“He kind of tries to stay away from guys that are dangerous or have a dangerous style for him, especially because he’s looking toward the end of his career and he wants to retire without losing again,” he explained.
“It’s not necessarily how a champ should be, but at the same time, he’s trying to be smart about things,” Henderson added. “It’s all debatable.”
Silva has virtually cleaned out the UFC’s middleweight division and is seeking a mega-fight against welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre. A fight against light-heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones is also possible.
