MANILA – Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. said it's hard not to be suspicious of how Juan Manuel Marquez’s got his bulky physique, given the Mexican boxer’s age.
Donaire, 2012’s Fighter of the Year, said he doesn’t believe that Marquez’s muscle-bound appearance is a product of rigorous training alone.
“You can achieve his body by training and hard work but let me put it this way, I’m 30 and I can barely put a muscle on and I work hard,” the Filipino Flash said in an interview with Asian Journal’s Joseph Pimentel.
The suspicion was the primary reason why most boxing publications picked Donaire over the 39-year-old Marquez for Fighter of the Year honors.
Unlike Marquez, Donaire submits himself to 24/7 voluntary random Olympic-style drug testing.
“I’m not an activist but I do want to make it mandatory in all my fights,” he said. “I support clean fighting.”
However, Donaire still gave Marquez credit for beating Pacquiao.
He said anyone who gets a direct hit from Marquez’s potent right hand will get knocked out.
“It doesn’t matter whether you’re on something or not, when you get hit with a punch like that you’re going to sleep,” said Donaire.
Donaire added that the Mexican just caught with perfect timing.
“That was a mistake Manny made. He was eager to go out there and he got caught with a good punch that Marquez was practicing for a long time.”
