MANILA, Philippines – The Petron Blaze Booster gained a share of second place after routing the Barangay Ginebra Kings, 105-90, in their PBA Commissioner’s Cup clash Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Renaldo Balkman once again sparked the Blaze Boosters with 34 points and 10 rebounds, while JuneMar Fajardo (18 points, seven boards), Jay Washington (14 points) and Arwind Santos (11 points) all scored in double-digits.
Petron shot over 50% from the field and broke the game open in the third period, when they turned a 51-44 halftime lead to a 86-63 advantage.
"We talked about consistency because that was our main problem last conference. We were up and down last conference," Petron coach Olsen Racela told PBA.ph.
"For this game, I told them, 'Let's just be consistent.' I want them to come out with intensity and energy for every game," he added.
"That’s our main focus right now, to be consistent with our efforts, especially on defense."
Petron won its second straight game to hike its record to 2-1, tied with GlobalPort for second in the league.
Meanwhile, Ginebra remains winless after three games.
The Blaze Boosters led by as much as 23 points, though the Kings were able to bring the lead down to just 13 in the final quarter even as import Herbert Hill was stuck on the bench.
Hill finished with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds but was benched for the entire fourth quarter and is set to be replaced by a new import, Vernon Macklin, this week.
Mark Caguioa topscored for the Kings with 24 points, while LA Tenorio added 18.
