MANILA, Philippines – Filipino champ Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao will begin training at the gym this week for his April 12 rematch against undefeated American Timothy Bradley Jr.
Pacquiao began running last week, and his longtime friend and assistant trainer, Buboy Fernandez, told PhilBoxing that the “Pacman” will start working at the gym on Tuesday.
“Light lang muna,” Fernandez said. “A few rounds with the mitts and stretching. He’ll also work on the double end ball and the speed ball to start regaining eyes, hands and feet coordination.”
Fernandez added that they are not worried about Pacquiao’s physical condition and stamina.
“Alam mo naman, Manny plays basketball regularly, kaya ‘yung stamina n’ya, lagi naman nandoon,” he explained. “And before flying to the U.S. for the media tour last week, Manny started his road work by running for 30 minutes daily sa Forbes Park kapag nasa Maynila at dito sa GenSan kung nandito siya.”
“That’s why getting back his stamina and physical condition will be the least of our problems.”
Pacquiao will hold the first part of his training camp in General Santos City before moving to Los Angeles, where the “Pacman” is likely to start sparring as well.
“Ang bilin lang sa amin ni coach Freddie (Roach), i-prepare si Manny para pagdating niya, preparado na si Manny sa very extensive training regimen na inihanda niya,” said Fernandez.
Pacquiao is trying to avenge his June 2012 loss to Bradley, wherein the American was awarded a controversial split decision and annexed the WBO welterweight title.
