MANILA, Philippines – Filipino boxing managers and promoters are reportedly coming together against Michael Koncz, the Canadian adviser of boxing champ and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao.

According to a report on the Manila Standard Today last week, a group of boxing promoters met up and put together a manifesto declaring Koncz “persona non grata.”

The promoters and managers are angry because of Koncz’s “acts of injustice towards the Filipino boxing community,” which reportedly includes mismanaging the careers of some young Filipino fighters.

A promoter was quoted as saying: “Masyado nang abuso itong si Koncz. He throws his weight around because of his strong ties with Manny Pacquiao, kaya kahit ang Top Rank nangingilang kay Koncz dahil ayaw nilang ma-offend si Manny.”

The final straw was apparently the cancellation of the fight of Filipino boxer Ernie Sanchez in the United States, which came at the last minute. Sanchez was supposed to fight at a Top Rank card two weeks ago, but two days before Sanchez was supposed to leave for Los Angeles, he and his team received word that the fight was cancelled.

Koncz had apparently opposed the fight and claimed managerial rights over Sanchez, which the boxer opposed.

“Wala po akong pirmahang kontrata kay Mr. Koncz, kaya wala po siyang karapatan sa aking mga laban,” Sanchez told MST.

Meanwhile, the wife of Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire commended the managers for their move.

“This has been a long time coming,” Rachel Donaire said in a Facebook post. “Way before this, I have said he needs to stop meddling with other people.”

Rachel revealed that Koncz has been “the major reason Nonito was never allowed on Pacquiao’s undercards.”

“Koncz has been known to pull fighters off cards that he personally isn’t collecting money from. I’ve seen it with many Filipino fighters, because he wants to collect from all Filipino fighters,” she added.

Rachel added that it was not fair for young Filipino fighters who could not get a break because of the influence of Koncz, whom she called a “foreigner (who thinks) he is the gatekeeper to all that’s boxing.”

“Unfortunately, until Pacquiao kicks him out and takes away his power, he will continue to push his influence to try to control RP boxers,” said Rachel.

Neither Pacquiao nor Koncz have commented on the issue.
