MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE 2) Filipino basketball fans may be in for a treat as a National Basketball Association (NBA) game will reportedly be played at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in the near future.
The MOA Arena’s Twitter account hinted that “big things are coming” to the world-class venue, and posted a picture of the NBA logo.
However, a representative of the MOA Arena management clarified that they are still finalizing the details of the event.
“Teams are not confirmed yet and it will be speculative to say an NBA game will be held at the MOA Arena," he said.
An ESPN reporter tweeted last week that the Indiana Pacers and the Houston Rockets may play a pre-season game in the Philippines.
Numerous NBA stars have visited the country. In July 2011, a group of All-Stars including Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant played a two-game series against PBA All-Stars and the Gilas Pilipinas national team.
In July 2012, former NBA players, including Dennis Rodman and Scottie Pippen, also played an exhibition game against a selection of former PBA stars.
The NBA has held pre-season games in China, including a two-game series between the Miami Heat and the Los Angeles Clippers last October 2012.
