MANILA, Philippines – Renaldo Balkman tallied a double-double and the Petron Blaze Boosters notched their first win of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup by crushing the San Mig Coffee Mixers, 98-73, Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Balkman had 28 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and two blocks and Petron limited San Mig to only 36% shooting from the field as they coasted to victory.
"It's a good bounce-back win for us after that frustrating game against GlobalPort," Petron head coach Olsen Racela told PBA.ph. "It's more of the intangibles that we showed in the game – the hustle, the intensity, the effort."
Jay Washington scored 17 points and Alex Cabagnot fired 15 markers for the Blaze Boosters, who also welcomed back swingman Marcio Lassiter (nine points, 3-of-5 from beyond the arc).
Petron broke the game open in the second period, as they outscored San Mig 28-8 to build a 48-22 halftime lead.
Balkman outscored the Mixers by himself in the second frame, 10-8.
"We just played together," said the former New York Knick and Denver Nugget.
"Masyadong malaki agad ang nilamang namin sa first half," Racela said. "That's the big difference."
Racela admitted that they were also inspired by their opening day loss to GlobalPort.
James Yap scored 25 points for the Mixers, who remain winless in the conference with a 0-2 record.
Import Matt Rogers finally made his debut for San Mig, scattering 20 points and nine rebounds, but he was generally outplayed by Balkman.
