MANILA, Philippines – Mapua’s head coach Atoy Co said his main goal for the Cardinals in the coming 89th NCAA basketball season is to reach the final four.
Co, who took over the coaching reins for Mapua, he’d like to transform the team to one that “fights until the end.”
“This year, my dream is to get into Top 4. That would be a big achievement for the team, for me and for everybody,” he said.
Under coach Chito Victolero, the Mapua Cardinals finished seventh in the 88th NCAA men’s basketball tournament on eight wins and 10 defeats.
This prompted the Mapua team management to sign up Co, a former Cardinal himself, with hopes of improving the team’s performance.
Co said he plans to bring in a conditioning coach to help his players stay fit during the tournament.
“There are a lot of factors to consider to improve our game, foremost of which are to ensure that my players are in tip-top shape and for them to have a high morale when the next NCAA season begins,” he said.
He also admitted feeling the pressure to deliver, but maintained that he wants to be realistic.
“Yes, I feel the pressure but I don’t like to make promises. We will do our best,” said the “Fortune Cookie.”
“Hopefully, with all the support, in three years we will be playing for the championship.”
