LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- The country's professional billiard players will slug it out with stars from the World Professional Billiard League this weekend in an all-star charity billiards challenge.
Representing the Philippines are “Money Game King” Dennis Orcollo, Warren Kiamco and Carlo Biado, who are hoping not only to bring home the prize money but also to boost the Philippine team's ranking in World Professional Billiard League.
According to Orcollo, this league is different from other world tournaments he has participated in.
“Tatlong pocket lang bawat team. So medyo may kalituhan ng konti, pero mainit itong partner ko,” said Orcollo, referring to Biado.
Orcollo noted that 2014 is turning out to be a good year for Pinoy billiard players.
“Nag-champion ako sa bank, final kami ni [Django] Bustamante, tapos si Efren [Reyes] naman nanalo sa one pocket. So napagandang napakagandang pangitain ang taon na ito sa mga Pilipino,” he said.
Kiamco, who ranks No. 1 in the World Professional Billiard League, said he is confident that the Filipinos will win because both Biado and Orcollo are world champions.
“Kailangan naming manalo rin kasi kumbaga ‘yung dala namin is Philippines. Philippine team kami,” said Kiamco, who also acts as the team's coach.
“Kailangan ko lang silang turuan ng rules, at saka 'yung titirahin kasi malaki talaga ang 'yung pinag kakaiba ng game na ito. Kasi 'yung nine ball is from 1-9. Ito, iba itong laro, parang snooker ito. Combination kasi ito ng rotation, one pocket, bank at saka snooker. Maraming rules dito kaya 'yun ang kailangan nilang matutunan. Sabagay magaling naman sila,” he explained.
Thirty-one year-old Biado, a former golf caddy, has been touring the world to compete in pool tournaments with Orcollo.
“Kailangan naming sumali ng tournament dito kasi walang tournament sa Asia, kaya eh siyempre billiard lang ang pinaka-hanap buhay namin kaya dito na lang muna kami,” he said.
Proceeds of this event will benefit victims of typhoon Yolanda through the Asian Pacific American Coalition for Diversity.
