MANILA, Philippines – The University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Tigresses ended the Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws' hopes of making the Final Four of the UAAP Season 75 women's volleyball tournament with a four-set victory in their second-round match-up.
Carmela Tunay scattered 14 points and skipper Judy Caballejo came alive in the final set as the Tigresses won with scores of 13-25, 25-23, 26-24 and 25-21 in their game at the San Juan Arena Wednesday.
The Tigresses, who have had an up-and-down season, got off to a lackluster start as they scored only 13 points in the first set.
A balanced effort from Tunay, Maika Oritz and Maru Banaticla, as well as 10 unforced errors from FEU, allowed the Tigresses to claim the second set.
The Lady Tams suffered a blow in the third set when veteran Toni Basas had to be carried off the court due to an ankle injury, and the Tigresses would go on to win the set.
Despite the loss of the Basas, the Lady Tams were able to seize control in the fourth set, even leading 14-10 before Tunay rallied the Tigresses and tied the game at 15-all.
Caballejo, who was inefficient all game, finally came alive in the fourth set as she scored on a variety of attacks, including a kill that put UST on top 22-19.
After an error by Banaticla allowed the Lady Tams to save a set point, 21-24, Ortiz put an end to the match with an attack from the middle.
Ortiz finished the game with 11 points.
The loss doomed the Lady Tams to a 6-7 record and sixth place in the league standings behind the National University Lady Bulldogs.
Rosemarie Vargas scored 13 points for FEU, while Wenneth Eulalio had 12 markers.
UST, meanwhile, fortified their Final Four campaign as they booked their eighth win of the season against five losses.
