LAS VEGAS, Nevada – World super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire had an impeccable 2012 as he bagged numerous “Fighter of the Year” awards from different agencies and media outlets.
Among the most prestigious organizations who honored Donaire was the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA).
The BWAA named Donaire their “Fighter of the Year,” besting other candidates including Juan Manuel Marquez and Brian Viloria.
Donaire will receive the BWAA Fighter of the Year award on April 11 at the Radio City Music Hall in New York.
“The Filipino Flash” is also excited for his first fight of 2013, which will be against fellow champion Guillermo Rigondeaux of Cuba.
“He is a thinking fighter,” Donaire said of Rigondeaux, a two-time Olympic gold medalist. “It’s gonna be a chess match, but I’m gonna make it into a faster pace.”
After fighting four times in 2012, Donaire hopes to fight at least three times in 2013.
“Kung makakaya ko yung three fights, gagawin ko yung three fights. Kung mamakaya ko ang four fights, gagawin ko din yung four fights,” he said.
“Titingnan ko lang kung nao ‘yung ibibigay sa akin for this year, but one thing is for sure, sa April 13th ready na ako,” Donaire promised. -- From a report by Bev Llorente, ABS-CBN News North America
