MANILA, Philippines – Filipino cue artist Efren “Bata” Reyes aims to weave his old magic in the 2012 Philippine Bigtime Billiards (PBB) Face Off series, dubbed as the Philippines versus Asia on Saturday, February 18 at the Pagcor Airport Casino in Parañaque City.
Reyes will face off against two-time WPA World Junior Champion Taiwanes Ko Pin-Yi.
Reyes, the first Asian inducted to the Billiards Hall of Fame, defeated fellow two-time world champion Wu Jian Qiang, 9-6, in the last PBB Face Off last December 30.
“I trained hard for this fight so I can give a good show for pool fans,” said Reyes.
Future matches of the PBB Face Off series will pit Ko against Francisco “Django” Bustamante on February 25.
According to Verna Mariano of BRKHRD Corp. and Bugsy Promotions, the PBB series will introduce a fresh new format for 2012.
“The events will maintain the one-on-one match format every week, but each season will be composed of 17 weeks,” she said.
“A year is effectively divided into three season. In each season, players will be determined by their team affiliation.”
Mariano added that they tournament will take on a format similar to the Davis Cup in tennis or the Ryder Cup in gold, which sees two national or continental teams compete per season.
“National or continental teams will be composed of, but not restricted to, seven to 10 players, who must carry the nation or continent’s flag in international competitions,” she said.
Each win in the one-on-one events will give a team one point, with the team having the most points by the end of the 17-week season being declared the winner.
For this season, the Philippine Team is composed of Reyes, Bustamante, Dennis Orcollo, Ronato Alcano, Carlo Biado, Lee Vann Corteza, Alex Pagulayan and Antonio Lining.
They will be going up against the Asian Team, composed of Ko, Chang Jung-lin, Yang Ching-shun, Chao Fong Pang and Chang Yu Long. – By Marlon Bernardino.
