It may have taken a lot of blood, sweat and tears but 17-year-old Filipino figure skater Michael Christian Martinez, the country's lone bet to the Sochi Winter Olympics in Russia, is on his way to achieving his dream.
In 2010, 'Bandila' did a feature on Martinez, then only 13 years old. At that age, he had already won over 180 medals from various figure skating competitions all over the world.
When asked what his ultimate dream is, he said he wants to compete in the Olympics and bring pride to the Philippines.
Martinez' story has captured the hearts of many Filipinos when his mother revealed that his son is pursuing his Olympic dream even without support from the government.
Mrs. Martinez said she even had to have their house mortgaged in order to finance the travel costs for international tournaments.
Martinez is scheduled to compete Thursday night in Sochi.
