MANILA, Philippines – Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight contender Chael Sonnen believes reigning light-heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones is the greatest talent in the sport and is even better than Brazil’s Anderson Silva.
In an interview with Fox Sports Radio, Sonnen expressed his belief that Jones is a “considerably better” fighter than Silva, the longtime UFC middleweight champion who is considered as the best in the world pound-for-pound.
“I think there’s a big gap between them. I think that Jon Jones is considerably better. I think he’s the best talent our sport has ever seen,” Sonnen told Jay Mohr.
“Jon comes out there with something new every time,” Sonnen explained. “Some trick that it appears he’s making up. Stuff I’ve never seen.”
Sonnen is currently coaching against Jones in The Ultimate Fighter 17 and will challenge him for the light-heavyweight belt on April 27.
Sonnen has already lost to Silva twice, first via submission and then via technical knockout, but he also gave “The Spider” all he can handle in their first fight at UFC 117 in August 2010.
He admits that he faces an uphill climb when he takes on Jones in their title fight, but Sonnen vows to go down swinging against “Bones.”
“I am 100% offense and from the second the referee says, ‘Go,’ I will,” Sonnen promised. “I will bring the fight to him.”
“I may go down. He’s a good fighter and I may go down, but I promise you, I will go like a gangster and I will be firing the entire time,” he added.
Jones has not lost a UFC match since 2009 and has successfully defended his championship belt four times.
