MANILA, Philippines – Although he can never go back to the sport he loves, injured fighter Z Gorres will be at ringside to support for his fellow Filipinos who will fight in Pinoy Power III/Latin Fury XIII on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) at the Las Vegas Hilton.

“Nalulungkot ako na hindi na ako maka-boxing… dahil bata pa ako, boxing na ako,” he told ABS-CBN Correspondent Dyan Castillejo.

Gorres, who is recovering from 2 major brain surgeries in Las Vegas, said he will especially cheer on Ciso Morales, the fighter who replaced him in the world title fight against Mexican Fernando Montiel.

Morales, for his part, said he hopes to show Montiel’s World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight belt to Gorres after the fight.

“‘Pag may suwerte, yayakap ako sa kanya... ‘Pag hindi naman, yayakapin ko pa rin siya,” noted Morales. He said he hopes to defeat his Mexican opponent with uppercuts and hooks.

Gorres then addressed Morales, Nonito Donaire, Jr., Mark Melligen, Bernabe Concepcion and Gerry Peñalosa: “Good luck nalang sa inyo sana pagbutihan niyo para maiwagayway ang bandila ng Pilipinas.”

World Boxing Association (WBA) interim super flyweight champion Donaire will defend his title against Manuel Vargas of Mexico. Vargas replaced fellow Mexican Gerson Guerrero, who failed his eye exam because of a detached retina.

Peñalosa will fight Puerto Rican Eric Morel while Concepcion will clash with Mario Santiago of Puerto Rico. Melligen will face Raymond Gatica in the undercard.

Pinoy Power 3 will be aired live on ABS-CBN on Sunday, February 14 at 10:30 a.m. Replays will be shown on the same day on Studio 23 at 8 p.m. and ABS-CBN’s “Sunday’s Best” at 10:30 p.m. Pinoy Power 3 replays will also be shown on February 16 at 4 p.m. and February 18 at 9 p.m. on SkyCable TV’s Balls Channel.

The fight continues

Gorres, meanwhile, has taken on another fight—his road to recovery.

The left side of his body is paralyzed but he can slightly move his left leg now. Walking is still a struggle for him, but he is getting there with the help of a walker.

“Everyday po parang may progress talaga,” said his wife, Datches, who is determined to help Gorres return to his normal condition.

The Filipino boxer spent more than 2 months in the hospital after suffering a brain injury in November during his 10-round clash against Colombian Luis Melendez.

He won by unanimous decision but suffered a left straight punch to the temple in Round 10 which caused a blood clot in his brain. He underwent his 2 major brain surgeries at the University Medical Center (UMC) in Las Vegas.

He is undergoing physical therapy with the help of Pinoy doctors in Las Vegas led by Filipino Las Vegas Doctors Association President Dr. Ben Calderon.

Z and Datches are grateful for Calderon for taking care of all the medical treatments, their lodging in Las Vegas, and even the soap-making business that they will start when they return to Cebu. The Gorres couple will reportedly be back in the Philippines on Tuesday, February 16.

Pinoys in Las Vegas, meantime, continue to solicit and give donations for the fallen boxer. The website ZGorres.info was also put up for online contributions. – With reports from Bev Llorente, ABS-CBN North America News Bureau and Dyan Castillejo, ABS-CBN News
