MANILA, Philippines – The De La Salle University men’s football team failed in its bid to avoid a Final Four showdown with the top-seeded Far Eastern University (FEU) in the UAAP Season 76 men’s football tournament.

La Salle settled for a 1-0 victory over National University in their last game of the elimination round, with Inigo Gonzales scoring off a header from a Gelo Diamante cross in the 89th minute.

The win allowed La Salle to tie the idle University of Santo Tomas (UST) in third place with 17 points. UST and La Salle have identical goal differential, with -3.

But the Growling Tigers clinched the third seed by virtue of having more goals scored than the Green Booters in the eliminations, 17-14.

UST will take on the second-ranked University of the Philippines (UP), who completed their elimination round assignment with a 3-1 victory over deposed champions Ateneo.

Jinggoy Valmayor grabbed a brace for UP, netting in the 41st and again in the 50th minute to hike his total to 11 goals this season.

FEU (33 points) and UP (25) will only need to win once in their respective semi-finals matches to advance to the finals.
