MANILA, Philippines – Defending champion De La Salle Lady Spikers trounced collegiate rival Ateneo Lady Eagles on Saturday to secure the top seeding in the Final Four of the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.
La Salle, already assured of a twice-to-beat advantage in the semis, zipped through Ateneo in straight sets, 25-19, 25-23, 25-21, before more than 19,000 spectators at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena.
Michelle Gumabao led the Lady Spikers with 14 points on 9 attacks. She also registered 3 blocks and 2 serves.
“Grabe ang intensity sa loob ng court,” she said during the post game interview.
“With a much bigger crowd now grabe ang ingay sa labas, kaya kailangan magkaintindihan sa loob, we have to communicate well [with our team mates].”
It was their 12 straight win, their second over Ateneo, since losing to University of Sto. Tomas in the season opener.
The Lady Spikers hacked out a 26-28, 21-25, 25-13, 25-21, 15-13 win against the Lady Eagles during their first round encounter.
La Salle is comfortably atop the standings with a 12-1 record, followed by Ateneo with 9-4, Adamson University (7-4) and UST (7-5).
The remaining games in the eliminations will determine the teams that will occupy the second, third and fourth seeding in the Final Four.
