MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Carabaos became the first Filipino team to participate in the Australian National Rugby League after they played in the one-day Rugby League tournament at the Cabramatta New Era Stadium in New South Wales last February 4.
The PH Carabaos are comprised of 17 players of Filipino descent, the Department of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
The Carabaos won their match against Fiji in the first round, and went on to beat Portugal in the quarterfinals. They also defeated Team Burwood in the finals of the tournament.
According to Philippine National Rugby League team manager Greg Cross and secretary Erick Elefante, the team started with a stable of six players. Most of the players are from New South Wales, Canberra and Queensland.
The team's management plans to promote rugby among the youth not just in Australia but also in the Philippines.
Cross and Elefante told Consul General Anne Jalando-on Louis that they will coordinate with various Philippine rugby squads, including school-based organizations and the Philippine National Police rugby league team.
The team is registered with Rugby League International Federation.
