MANILA – The University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers remained in title contention after beating the Ateneo Blue Batters, 17-14, in the UAAP baseball tournament last Thursday.
According to UAAP Sports, Ateneo, which already secured a spot in the finals, limited the playing time of their starters, allowing UST to surge ahead, 7-4, at the end of the second inning.
The Tigers hiked their lead to 8-4 with another run in the fourth.
UST fumbled in the following frame, giving Ateneo several opportunities to tie the game 8-all.
The Blue Batters then belted out 7 runs to seize an 11-8 advantage.
The Tigers recovered with 8 runs to overtake the Blue Batters, 16-11, before eventually closing out the game, 17-14.
The win tied UST with defending champion National University (7-3), setting a playoff between the Tigers and Bulldogs for the right to face Ateneo in the finals.
The playoff game takes pace on Sunday.
