MANILA, Philippines – GlobalPort leaned on newly acquired Japeth Aguilar and Solomon Mercado to pull off a 94-92 come-from-behind against Petron Blaze on Friday night's PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Aguilar, who was traded by Talk ‘N Text to GlobalPort, dished out an all-around performance with 16 points, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks, 3 assists and 2 steals against the Boosters, according to PBA’s website.
New recruit Solomon Mercado also had a strong outing for GlobalPort, registering a double-double of 17 points and 11 assists.
Gary David, Batang Pier’s resident scoring machine, was his usual self by scoring 28 points, nearly half of them in the fourth period.
The three stepped up following the ejection of their import Justin Williams in the third quarter, while battling their way out of an 11-point deficit.
Williams was called for flagrant foul-penalty two after he was caught throwing an elbow at Petron Blaze’s June Mar Fajardo.
The GlobalPort import finished with 18 points, 15 rebounds and 3 blocks before his banishment.
Fortunately, Aguilar’s presence inside the shaded lane beefed up GlobalPort’s defense.
Import Renaldo Belkman led Petron Blaze with 23 point and 14 rebounds, while Arwind Santos added 15 points and 10 boards.
Their efforts, however, came short as key players Jay Washington and Alex Cabagnot failed to add scoring boost.
