MANILA, Philippines – The Ateneo Lady Eagles advanced to the semi-finals of the UAAP Season 75 women’s volleyball tournament after a three-set victory over the University of the East (UE) Lady Warriors Wednesday at the San Juan Arena.
Alyssa Valdez scored 19 points on 15 kills, two blocks and two aces to propel Ateneo to a 25-11, 25-14 and 25-23 victory.
Team captain Dzi Gervacio had another stellar game as she scored 10 points, including four blocks, while veterans Fille Cainglet and Gretchen Ho had eight and six points, respectively.
It was the Lady Eagles’ ninth win against three losses this season and allowed them to clinch a berth in the Final Four.
Meanwhile, the Lady Warriors remained winless in Season 75.
The Lady Eagles raced to a two-set victory behind the attacking prowess of Valdez, who remains the league’s leading scorer.
But UE threatened in the third set, even taking a brief 12-10 lead before Ateneo took charge again thanks to Valdez. The Lady Warriors were able to get as close as one point late in the set, 22-23, but Ho and Cainglet combined to score the final two points for Ateneo.
Leuseht Dawis was the only player in double figures for the Lady Warriors with 11 markers.
In the second game, the defending champions De La Salle Lady Spikers routed the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons, 25-15, 25-14 and 25-13, to win their 11th straight game this season.
Reigning league Most Valuable Player Abi Maraño led La Salle’s charge with 13 points, while Mika Reyes added nine and Michelle Gumabao scored eight points.
Jay Ong scored 10 points for the Lady Maroons, who are stuck at a single victory this season.
The Lady Eagles and the Lady Spikers will meet in their highly anticipated rematch on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
