MANILA, Philippines – Former world champion and Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya believes one of his fighters, Abner Mares, will beat newly crowned World Boxing Organization super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire.
Mares is the reigning International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Council silver bantamweight champion. He is the No. 2 bantamweight fighter in The RING’s ratings.
“After watching Saturday’s fights, I’m convinced Abner Mares beats Nonito Donaire,” De La Hoya tweeted last February 6.
Donaire defeated Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. via split decision to annex the WBO crown. Though he was dominant throughout and even knocked Vazquez down in the ninth round, Donaire failed to produce the highlight-reel knockout that he was searching for.
De La Hoya believes that Mares, who is undefeated through 23 professional bouts, has what it takes to beat Donaire, the No. 4 pound-for-pound boxer on the planet.
But the former “Golden Boy” does not think Donaire will ever fight Mares.
“I guess we will never see it as Bob Arum will find (an) excuse,” he tweeted.
Donaire is promoted by Arum’s Top Rank promotions.
