MANILA, Philippines – National team head coach Chot Reyes will unveil the Gilas Pilipinas roster for the FIBA Asia Championship on Thursday, with the squad expected to start regular Monday practices next week.
The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) team owners on Tuesday decided to postpone the season-ending Governors Cup, giving the national team two uninterrupted months to prepare for the August tournament.
"Two months. Final pool to be released on Thursday, after special PBA board meeting," Reyes tweeted after the PBA's decision was announced.
"We have two months. Let's make the most of what’s given. Just pray for Team Pilipinas," he added.
PBA Commissioner Chito Salud had earlier proposed that each team allow at least one player to suit up for flag and country in the upcoming tournament.
"I want to know if they're sticking with the one-player-per-team policy," Reyes told the official league website. "The final roster will depend on it."
Among the players who are likely to make the final Gilas pool are those who competed in the Jones Cup and the FIBA Asia Cup, as well as Talk 'N Text players Kelly Williams, Jayson Castro and Jimmy Alapag.
Also being considered are Marc Pingris of San Mig, Junmar Fajardo of Petron Blaze and cadet player Greg Slaughter.
Spin.ph reported that Petron forward Arwind Santos is also being eyed for the national team pool, while Rain or Shine has made their entire team available.
