MANILA, Philippines – Unbeaten American superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr. announced on his social media accounts Wednesday that he is close to completing a deal to fight fellow welterweight champion Devon Alexander.

"The negotiations for my fight are almost done," Mayweather posted on his Twitter and Facebook accounts. "The frontrunner is IBF champion Devon Alexander."

“It’d be a unification bout at welterweight.”

The announcement came as a surprise, as most expected Mayweather to fight Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero on May 4 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Alexander, who holds a record of 24 wins with one loss, had recently pulled out of his mandatory title defense against British fighter Kell Brook due a biceps injury.

Alexander was scheduled to fight Brook on February 23 but announced last Monday that he has injured his bicep, causing the fight to be postponed.

Boxing Scene notes that both Mayweather and Alexander are represented by boxing adviser Al Haymon.
