Bradley insists he won first Pacquiao fight
Undefeated American Timothy Bradley Jr. remains defiant when asked about his first fight against Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao, insisting that he deserved the victory.
Bradley became the WBO welterweight champion in June 2012 when he defeated Pacquiao via split decision, an outcome few expected. It was widely considered one of the most controversial decisions in the history of the sport.
Ahead of their April 12 rematch, Bradley continues to insist that he deserved the controversial victory.
“I scored our fight eight rounds to four in my favor,” Bradley said, as quoted by PhilBoxing. “There’s no way he won that fight.”
Very few people agreed with Bradley, including a group of judges commissioned by the WBO to re-score the fight.
Pacquiao, who displayed class in the aftermath of the controversy, was also quick to disagree with the American.
“I remember last time believing that I won the first fight against Tim Bradley,” said Pacquiao. “I thought I was leading after every round. I thought I won the fight easily. I controlled the fight, every round.”
Pacquiao said Bradley fulfilled his expectations by running once he felt the power of the Filipino, although he also acknowledged that he could have trained harder for the fight.
“To be honest, I wasn’t as motivated when I was training for our first fight. I guess I didn’t take him seriously enough,” the Filipino champ said.
“I was very surprised by the decision,” Pacquiao said. “But that’s part of the game. He got the decision and my title.”
Bradley will have a chance to redeem himself and go for a decisive victory, while Pacquiao will try for revenge, when they meet again on April 12 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
“I am a different fighter than the one who fought Pacquiao in our first fight,” Bradley promised. “I am more mature, smarter, and I now listen to what my corner is saying.”
“The only way Bradley can beat me this time is to knock me out,” Pacquiao countered. “He cannot outbox me. I will be the aggressor. I will throw a lot of punches at him… and I will land them. Last time, I was too nice. This time, I will finish what I start.”
