Arum feels Garcia not yet ready for Pacquiao
Unbeaten boxer Mikey Garcia may have dominated challenger Juan Carlos Burgos in his recent fight but Top Rank promoter Bob Arum does not believe the super featherweight champion is ready for a showdown against Manny Pacquiao.
Garcia overcame a brief struggle in the second round before cruising the rest of the way, but it was far from a spectacular victory.
Speaking to Hustle Boss, Arum said Garcia has to start changing his mindset about fights if he wants to become a superstar in the sport.
“I think Mikey has to understand that if he’s going to be a superstar, that when his opponent goes into that defensive mood, that he can’t take the bait and just win rounds,” Arum said.
“He’s got to go out and search and destroy,” he added.
Arum had been considering pitting Garcia against Pacquiao in a fight in the near future, but the promoter admitted that may be off the table for now.
“Certainly, not off his performance against Burgos,” he said.
Instead, Arum wants to put together a fight between Garcia and undefeated Cuban Yuriorkis Gamboa.
“We’re optimistic that as he steps up and fights guys like Gamboa and is successful, then Pacquiao is a possibility,” the promoter said.
