MANILA, Philippines – The UAAP chess joust between six-time champion Far Eastern University (FEU) and De La Salle University (DLSU) ended in a draw during their men’s chess showdown at the FEU Manila campus over the weekend.

The Tamaraws headed by International Master Richelieu Salcedo III, Sheider Nebato, Lennon Hart Salgados and Alfredo Rapanot halved the point with the Green Archer's Franz Robert Grafil, Aglipay Oberio, Jeazzir Kline Surposa and Jan Nigel Galan.

The showdown ended in a 2-2 draw.

The Tams, however, remained at the top of the heap with 24.5 accumulated points followed by the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers with 22.5 points and La Salle with 21.5 points.

"Malakas masyado 'yung DLSU pero ok na din y'ung 2-2 draw," said FEU head coach GM Jayson Gonzales.

The UST wood pushers, meanwhile, edged National University (NU), 2.5-1.5.

Patrick Erle Florendo and Steven James Dacanay provided the twin kill for UST on Board 2 and 3.

Timothy So Kua halved the point with Virgen Gil Ruaya on Board 1.

The lone point for the Bulldogs came from Neil Conrad Pondoc who upset heavily favored Normel Benigno de Jesus on Board 4.

"Buti nakalusot tayo sa NU, mabigat na team yan eh," said UST head coach GM-elect Ronald Dableo assisted by candidate master Peter Lim.

Adamson University beat University of the East, 2.5-1.5, while University of the Philippines blasted Ateneo de Manila University, 3-1.

Defending champion FEU and Adamson tallied 21.5 points each to share the lead in the juniors division, while last year's women's champion La Salle is leading the way with 27.5 points. -- By Marlon Bernardino
