MANILA, Philippines – Around 100 children and over 50 adults competed in the third edition of Cong. Randolph Sera Ting Chess Tournament in Tuguegarao City recently.

Among the children who participated in the five-round tournament were 11-year-old Jacy Miguel and 12-year-old Karl Janrey Lazatin.

Both Miguel and Lazatin are representatives of Cagayan to the Cagayan Valley Regional Athletic Association (CAVRAA).

“Magaling din ang mga ito, pang-CAVRAA sila,” said coach Rolando Oro.

Children aged seven to 12 years old participated in the junior division, while adults from 30 to 70 years old competed in the senior division.

Apolinario Agustin, founder of the Cagayan Chess
Development Club, said the tournament not only helps the children and the adults develop their skills in chess, but also teaches sportsmanship and self-discipline.

“Ang larong chess ay diskarte,” Agustin said. “Nakakatalino ito sa mga bata, lalo na sa math... Kasi kapag naglalaro ka ng chess, utak mo ‘yung gumagana.”

Because of the favorable response to the sport, more chess tournaments are expected to be held in Cagayan in the coming months. -- Report from Hanna Salatan, ABS-CBN News Cagayan Valley
